Born and raised in Portland, Oregon, I first moved east to attend McDaniel College, a private liberal arts college in Westminster, Maryland. I studied Communication, Political Science, and Journalism & New Media in the college’s undergraduate program.
I have interned on the editorial staff at Baltimore magazine, with McDaniel’s First Stop Office, worked as a First Year Seminar Peer Mentor, an Engagement Peer with McDaniel’s Office of Student Engagement, and worked at the Institutional Advancement Phone Center since my first year, three as a supervisor.
I am a member of the prestigious Honors Program which I was admitted to with my acceptance into the college in 2015. I have served as the Program’s President and Housing Manager, as well as a writer on the Nerd News staff, the Program’s newsletter. I also served as an Honors Peer Mentor, helping guide first-year Honors students in their transition into the Program through a course that explored themes of privilege, failure, and personal reflection.
In March 2018, I was recognized as a Newman Civic Fellow by Campus Compact, a collective of colleges and universities committed to fulfilling the public purposes of higher education. The fellowship is a year-long experience designed to provide learning opportunities focused on the skills we need in order to serve as effective agents of change in addressing public problems and building equitable communities.
I was awarded the Aristotle Award for Excellence in Communication at McDaniel as a junior which recognizes one student annually for outstanding academic work in the discipline. In 2019, I was awarded with the Bates Prize for most outstanding graduating senior from McDaniel.
I have served as the President of the Alpha Epsilon Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi Omega National Co-Ed Service Fraternity and previously served as the Vice President of Membership. In these roles I led initiatives to reduce costs through the creation of an alumni-supported scholarship, chaired the hosting of a conference with over 100 brothers and 10 chapters, organized a campus-wide orientation service experience, and created an alternative spring break which allowed students to remain on campus over break and serve in our community.
I have been on staff of The McDaniel Free Press, the college’s student-run newspaper, since my first semester. I was a staff reporter in the sports section for a year, sports editor for two years, and hold the position of Co-Editor-in-Chief for the 2018-2019 year. You can read my work here.
I also serve as the President of McDaniel’s chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society for First-Year Students and our chapter of Lambda Pi Eta National Honor Society for Speech Communication as selected by department faculty. I am also a member of Pi Sigma Alpha National Political Science Honor Society, Pi Gamma Mu International Honor Society for the Social Sciences, Sigma Tau Delta English Honor Society, Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society, and the Trumpeters, a leadership honor society at McDaniel.
